My name is Bethan and my passions have always been art and travel.
Recent travels with my two young sons provided a wonderful opportunity to travel differently, to take things at a much slower pace and see the world through their eyes. Sharing in their fascination with animals, exploring new environments together and seeing their joy at meeting new people and hearing about their lives.
Returning from our trip to Zambia we made some memory books, my boys had so much fun doing this and I saw how receptive they were to learning through simple hands-on activities. As we talked about the things they had enjoyed I realised that even though they are still very young, they are beginning to understand that not all people live the same way they do.
This was my inspiration to set up the Future Explorers’ Club, a monthly travel letter subscription for children to spark a global perspective through learning about our natural world and it’s people.
In developing my ideas for the Future Explorers’ Club I remembered how exciting it is for a child to receive an old fashioned ‘snail mail’ letter in the post, something that has been largely lost in our digital world. As a child I received regular letters in the post from my grandmother and I can vividly recall the anticipation of my letter arriving, the thrill of seeing my name on the envelope and the excitement of opening it up. I realised my children had never, as yet, experienced this and I thought about how much they would enjoy receiving regular letters in the post.
In our fast paced world it feels important to find time to being fully present with my children, outdoor play, nature walks and bedtime stories help me achieve this - where I manage to press pause and just play!
I am hoping the Future Explorers’ Club can offer an alternative to screen time fostering creativity and connection through shared family activities - reading and talking about exciting travel adventures and crafting and cooking together.
I hope you choose to come along with us,
From Bethan
